Microsoft Outlook is an Outstanding Email platform and working well. It provides users great features like Search Folder, Various rules, Templates to automate the workflow. MS Outlook uses the personal folder that is PST (Personal Storage Table) file to store all the mailbox data which includes Emails, contacts, calendars, Journal, Tasks etc. We have seen a lot of cases face difficult continue their communication via Outlook due to corruption in PST

What is ScanPST.exe?
As I have discussed above that ScanPST.exe is built- in utility. It is bundled with MS Outlook, so it installed along with Outlook. This tool tries to resolve the error of PST by recreating the Outlook data file structure and rebuilding the header of Outlook items. Although, ScanPST.exe is installed within Outlook but finding it is not so easy.

How do ScanPST.exe works?
It first examines the structure of PST file along with the header and recovers the item(s) and folder(s). This tool validates and recovers the internal data structure of PST file. If ScanPST.exe find any specific block of the structure or table is corrupt or non-readable then it eliminates the block. Although, This is a common issue faced by Outlook users.
Repair .PST file using Inbox Repair Tool
There are few steps included to repair your .pst file using ScanPST.exe. Follow the below instructions/steps carefully.
Step 1: Exit Outlook if running and Start the Inbox Repair Tool
It is mandatory to quit the Outlook if running. In order to start the Inbox repair tool you can check the location I have discussed above for your respective Outlook version.
Step 2: Repair the .pst file
Type the location and the file name of .PST file which you want to repair, or browse the PST file location by using the browse button.
· Click on the Browse then select the PST file and click Ok
· Under ‘Options’ you can check how you want to create the log report
· Once you have done all hit the Start button
Now ScanPST.exe runs and it completes the scanning process in 8 steps. The whole process may take time, depending on the level of corruption in your PST file
When the process gets complete, it shows:
No Errors found
Errors were found in this file. To repair these errors. Click Repair
If you want you can check the summary of Error by clicking on Details or proceed to repair pst file by clicking on Repair button.
Note: I suggest you make the backup of your PST file before repairing the PST file.
· Now Scanpst.exe check and eliminates the error of the Outlook Data File
· If the repair process gets completes it displays the message ‘ Repairs Complete’
· Click Ok to close the Inbox Repair Tool and restarts Outlook to rectify whether the problem is resolved or not.
Alternative solution if ScanPST.exe does not work
ScanPST.exe can repair PST file with minor corruption. The Inbox repair tool cannot resolve the problem if your PST file is highly corrupted. Sometimes you need to run it several times to permanently disregard the error. However, when it comes to tackling severely corrupted PST file it does not gives the effective result.
