In many places around the country, there is no professional
licensing system for computer tech support professionals. What this means is
that there is no regulatory body that you can trust to provide you with a
database of professionals who have cleared some type of technical exam. This
makes it much more difficult to hire a tech support professional who you are
sure that you can trust with the security of your equipment and information.
However, by asking the right questions, you can get a pretty good idea of
whether you’re dealing with a true professional or a fly-by-night operator.
What is Your Education
Like?
Although this seems like a personal question, remember that
there is no official licensing and certification body. So the best evidence you
have of professionalism is what kind of training and professional experience
someone has. Remember that in a technical, hands-on field like computer tech
support, serious professional experience is often worth as much or more than
theoretical classroom training.
Can I have a Reference,
Please?
As with hiring any service provider, the reference is one of
the most important pieces of information. However, it is not enough to simply ask
for satisfied customers, as your service provider can simply pick and choose
individuals with who he had a good working relationship, even if they
constituted a small fraction of his total customers. To really separate the
wheat from the chaff, you need to secure some professional references; what do
other people in the business think of your computer tech support provider. This
will allow you to get a good balance of information to help you make the right
decision.
What do your
Competitors Think of You?
Along the lines of professional references, try to ascertain
what the service provider’s competitors think of them. The best way to do this
is by finding a competitor in a closely related industry, and asking them to
provide a service that you know that don’t provide. When they say that they
don’t provide, ask if they would be able to refer you to someone else nearby.
Their recommendation is worth its weight in gold. A true professional
understands when he can’t do the job, or is too busy to take on the additional
work, and will maintain of network of related professionals to whom he can
refer work. Only an amateur will try to take on your job when they know that
they are unable to do it properly.
These questions are enough to test your Computer Tech Support,
but if still you want to get double sure and ask him questions related to
various new technology like – “How to repair a corrupt PST? ”, or you may ask “What
are efficient methods to repair corrupt PST? ” etc. Asking these questions will
make sure that the person whom you are dealing with is a professional or not.
