Protocol Suite across the network. Internet Protocol's main responsibility is to address host and routing packets. Every datagram contains two numeric address one is source address and other is destination address of the packet.
IPv4 is the foundation of most Internet communication. Ipv6 the successor of the IPv4 is developed by IETF. Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) designed IPv6 so that, it can deal with long-anticipated IPv4 address exhaustion. IPv4, an Internet layer protocol to provide end to end packets transmission across the different or multiple IP networks so the IPv6 does. As IPv4 has some limitation like small address length of 232, manual configuration etc. To overcome all the loopholes of the IPv4; IPv6 introduced in the Internet world.
IPv6 minimize the packet header processing through router because it has new packet format. Its a new generation INTERNET protocol. Some features of IPv6 are mention below.
Features of IPv6:
Large Address Space Available: IPv4 has 232 address limit and IPv6 address limit is 2128 which is much more than IPv4. IPv6 address resources records in DNS to map host name. Inevitable exhaustion problem that is faced in IPv4 solved with large address space.
Multicasting: Multicasting means in a single send operation transmit a packet to the multiple destinations. IPv4 is optional in this case rather than common implementation. IPv6 improved some more feature of the IPv4 multicast and some existing ones. Traditional IP broadcast is not implemented by IPv6.
Network Layer Security Support: Internet protocol security support is optional in IPv4 but in IPv6 it is mandatory. It was originally made for IPv6. In IPv6 it is integral part of the base protocol. IPSec is protocol suite to secure INTERNET protocol. Through this datagram security increased automatically.
On June 8, 2011 world IPv6 day event started at 00:00 UTC. Internet Society and eminent content provider sponsored the event. This event is organized as a test event for IPv6 deployment. More than 400 participants participated in the event. Some major web companies enabled IPv6 on their websites for 24 hours on the test day.
Some of the big organizations who participated in IPv6 Day includes Comcast, Google, Yahoo, Facebook, Youtube, Akamai, Limelight Networks, Microsoft Bing, xbox.com, AOL, Mapquest, T-Online, Cisco, Juniper, Huawei, US Department of Commerce, Mastercard, BBC, AlterIW and Telmex.
Some more extraordinary features of Ipv6 includes Stateless address autoconfiguration, Router's simplified Processing, Mobility, Options extensibility, Jumbograms etc. IPv6 will provide much more address space, security and enhanced communication capabilities.
